To broaden the scope of its research, Hemerion funds initiatives and projects led by scientists or clinical teams capable of offering new perspectives on concrete challenges in the fight against cancer. Following a successful first edition in 2025, which recognized one American team and one European team, Hemerion is preparing for a second, more expansive edition.
The launch is scheduled for October 2026.
Since its founding, Hemerion has developed a very extensive network of clinical and scientific partners who help advance our innovations. Launched on a pilot basis in 2025 within this community, the first “Hemerion Research Grant” call for proposals generated significant interest, resulting in numerous scientific project submissions.
Following the selection process, two particularly promising preclinical projects were funded with 20 K€ each:
- The first project focuses on studying the immune response and changes in the tumor microenvironment associated with photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is led by Virginie Neirinckx and GIGA (the Interdisciplinary Research Institute in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Liège).
- The other funded project focuses on recurrence in glioblastoma. It is led by Prof. Costas Hadjipanayis, director of the Brain Tumor Nanotechnology Laboratory, Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC.
Second Edition Scheduled for October 2026
The second edition has the same objectives: to encourage and provide financial support for exploratory studies or proof-of-concept studies capable of generating new scientific insights in our areas of interest.It will focus on the following topics:
- Interactions between PDT and the immune system.
- Identification of biomarkers associated with treatment response.
- Evaluation of PDT in new oncological indications.
The Hemerion Research Grant is open to researchers and clinicians affiliated with an academic institution, a hospital, a research institute, or a nonprofit organization.
